Bone and Joint Centre Consultant Mr Peter gives lecture on “Minimally Invasive Hip Surgery: Minimise the complications, not the approach” at The Bangalore Orthopaedic Conference at Coorg, India. The conference was held for the first time outside of bangalore at Medikheri in Coorg. A hill resort in south India. Charity News – Greenbank Project

Employees at the Bone and Joint Centre and Spire Liverpool Hospital donated their Easter egg’s to the children at the Greenbank project in an event organised by the Spire Healthcare Liverpool Charity Team.

The Greenbank Project is a Liverpool based charity which provides a range of services for disabled people and other disadvantaged groups. Greenbank aims to enhance the opportunities and status of people with disabilities through education, training, employment, transport, sport and recreation.

The Greenbank Charity is situated onGreenbank Lane and is very local toSpireLiverpoolHospital. The charity team visited the centre to present the 30 children taking part in sport, art and craft activities at the centre during the Easter Camp Week with their Easter eggs.

Everyone involved had a lovely time with the children and the Bone and Joint Centre and Spire Liverpool Hospital would like to thank Jamie Harris and Mark Palmer for their kindness and for allowing the Charity Team to visit their inspiring centre.

BASK annual conference

Bone and Joint Centre consultants Mr Taylor, Mr Santini, Mr Davidson and Mrs Banks will all be attending the British Association for Surgery of the Knees (BASK) annual conference in Derby this week (3rd & 4th April)

BASK was set up in the early 1980′s to represent knee surgeons in Britain. It is now one of the largest surgical subspecialist organisations which brings together knee surgeons with the single aim of improving their patients care.

New MRI, SportScan and Perform Service Launch

The Bone and Joint Centre is pleased to announce that the new MRI, SportScan and Perform service is now available. Perform is a brand new service that combines medical expertise with leading technologies to allow you to perform at your very best. It was launched on the 22nd March by Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, professional rugby player Jon Wilkin and Liverpool Football Club player Charlie Adam.

Perform offers the very latest in technology including our Alter-G treadmill. Alter- G is an advanced anti-gravity treadmill that lowers a person’s body weight to reduce impact on their lower body. It is used by many elite sporting teams and orthopaedic surgeons to help speed up recovery from injury and surgery.

Basketball legend Calvin Davis tries out new Perform equipment

Top basketball player Calvin Davis, has been finding out what it’s like to use our new Alter-G treadmill. Calvin, who is originally from the USA is the centre for the Mersey Tigers basketball team, who are based in Liverpool.

Calvin has recently had an operation on his knee performed by Mr Davidson, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee surgery, at the Bone and Joint Centre at Spire Liverpool Hospital. In early March Calvin had an arthroscopy on his left knee to repair the cartilage. Knee arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery which is performed using a special telescope. Gentle knee exercises are recommended to help reduce stiffness and discomfort following treatment, as part of this, the Bone and Joint Centre have introduced Alter-G.

The Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill is part of the new Perform service offered at the Bone and Joint Centre. The anti-gravity Alter-G treadmill uses NASA developed technology in order to provide medical rehabilitation and sports performance training. The treadmill is partial weight-bearing which means it lowers a person’s body weight to reduce impact on their lower body. This means that users can improve their fitness and knee usage post-operatively whilst not doing any damage to their joints. Calvin says of the Alter-G treadmill: “I absolutely love it. It feels like I’m walking on water. I can’t swim so it feels like my version of swimming and it is such an amazing feeling”

It is used by many elite sporting teams and orthopaedic surgeons to help speed up recovery from injury and surgery. After care is of premium importance here at the Bone and Joint Centre and our new Perform service ensures that our patients are receiving the very best in orthopaedic care.

Liverpool’s Bone and Joint Centre goes the extra mile for Sport Relief

From Friday 23^rd March to Sunday 25^th March people across the UK will be supporting Sport Relief by getting active and raising money for this great cause.

The money raised by Sport Relief is spent by Comic Relief to help people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. It goes a long way, transforming the lives of people in the UK’s most disadvantaged communities, or those living with poor mental or physical health, to protecting street children and providing life-saving healthcare abroad.

This Friday staff from Liverpool’s Bone and Joint Centre based at Spire Liverpool Hospitalwill be raising money for this great cause. Fundraising activities will be going on throughout the hospital such as tombola, cake bake sales and we will also have a treadmill in the reception for staff to “run a mile” for Sport Relief.
