The annual BESS Conference was held this year at the ICC Wales in Newport.

Attending were Bone and Joint consultants Mr Matthew Smith and Mr Peter Brownson where they were co authors to the poster presentation entitled ‘Shoulder Injury Relating to Vaccine Administration after COVID 19 Vaccination: A Case Series.’

BASK Annual Scientific Conference

Mr Santini was on the organising committee of the BASK annual scientific conference this year held in Westminster as a joint meeting with representatives from the Australian, New Zealand and South African knee societies. The meeting was a great success and drew the largest participating number of delegates in BASK’s history.

Mr Santini moderated the session on Arthroplasty Registries which induced a debate on resurfacing the patella; lessons learnt for the Scottish Arthroplasty Project; a view on how the Australian Joint Registry has led to a change in surgeon’s practice; and a debate on camouflage in implant families.

HIs research team presented a poster on a 15 year old Survival Analysis of Oxidised Zirconium Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BESS Conference 2023

Mr Brownson recently attended the British Elbow and Shoulder Society Annual Conference at ICC Newport. As past President of BESS (2017-2019) and having held a seat on Council for 13 years this was the last year Mr Brownson will attend in his current position as a Council member.

Also attending were fellow Bone and Joint Centre Consultants, Matt Smith, Matt Kent and Rishee Parmar with Mr Kent and Mr Parmar both presenting in the Symposia afternoon session as part of the Instructional Course based around sports injuries.

A wonderful venue with fabulous hosting. Educational and interesting, providing great opportunities to learn and network amongst a group of peers at the top of their profession, we look forward to Aberdeen in June 2024.

BASK Revision Knee Instructional Course

Mr Santini recently attended the BASK Revision Knee Instructional Course in Birmingham. The meeting is for regional leads to meet and discuss the best way to progress revision knee surgery over the next few years.

Through a combination of the NHS,GIRFT,BOA and BASK, revision knee surgery in England has been regionalised with the North West region being divided into three sub regions. Mr Santini, along with Mr James Fountain, lead the Cheshire and Mersey area with Mr Santini also being given the honour of leading the regional network of the Major Revision Centre at Liverpool University Hospitals.

Bristol Revision Course

Mr Santini was recently invited to speak at the Bristol revision knee course where he discussed the use of metaphyseal sleeves and cones in revision knee surgery.

Also acting as a demonstrator, the cadaveric lab allowed surgeons to undertake revision surgery on cadavers under supervision of the faculty, all of whom were experienced revision knee surgeons.

Mr Dan Brown and Mr Graham Cheung attended the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Lisbon this June to present together on the following papers.

Anatomical Classifications In Distal Radius Fractures: Are They Accurate In Complex Fractures?

Modes Of Failure Of Surgical Fixation Of The Distal Radius Fail Using A Contemporary Locking Plate: Analysis Of 774 Consecutive Cases

These same papers were also presented in London from June 6^th to 10^th at the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) alongside further papers below

Complex distal radius fractures: limitations of plain radiographs in identification of individual fragments and fracture lines

How often does surgical fixation distal radius fail using a contemporary locking plate and can it be predicted? Analysis of 798 consecutive cases.

Mr Cheung was also delighted to be a guest lecturer at an industry sponsored meeting on thumb base replacements in the treatment of thumb base osteoarthritis.

Fasciotomy Significantly Improves Symptoms in Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome

Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a rare cause of chronic exertional leg pain. Debate exists regarding whether or not patients benefit from compartmental decompression over conservative treatment. Further, whether fasciotomy or a minimally invasive approach is superior and all compartments vs selective compartment decompression.

Mr Santini to present at BOA Annual Conference

The British Orthopaedic Association are holding their annual scientific meeting from September 20th to the 23rd this year.

Mr Alasdair Santini, orthopaedic surgeon at The Bone and Joint Centre specialising in knee and hip surgery, will be presenting on the 22nd September on ‘Total Knee Replacement in the Valgus Knee.’

The presentation will be part of the BASK session at the meeting which Mr Santini is also moderating which will also include two further speakers, Miss Chloe Scott and Mr Abtin Arvand.
